Heinrich Focke was born on this day in 1890 in Bremen Germany. He met Georg Wulf while studying at the Leibniz University in Hanover in 1911 and they remained friends for life. Heinrich served with both the infantry and the German Imperial Air Service during the First World War. In 1923 he founded Focke Wulf Flugzeugbah with Georg Wulf and Dr. Werner Naumann. An early pioneer in aviation, he was a champion of VTOL (vertical take off and landing) aircraft. His work was hugely influential. Tireless and driven, he worked till the very end, leaving behind a huge legacy. He died in February 1979.
